How to Upgrade Your Bedroom for Better Sleep This Summer

Summer is the most glorious season, with longer sunshine-filled days and lots of lovely outdoor activities. But it’s also the time of year when sleeping can be a struggle through the hot nights, especially during a heatwave. Like many of us I don’t benefit from indoor air conditioning in my home, so I like to switch up my bedding to make sure I enjoy cooler, refreshing sleep through the summer months.

1. Cool Cotton Bedding

To be honest, I sleep in natural fibre bedding like cotton all year round. However, it’s true that one of the simplest yet most effective ways to improve your sleep quality during the summer is to choose cotton bedding. Cotton is a natural fibre that breathes well and allows air to circulate, helping to keep you cool throughout the night.

I’ve just switched my bedding set over to the Simba 400TC Satin Weave Cotton Performance Bed Linen, which is 100% cotton. The high thread count of this gorgeous set not only gives a luxurious hotel-quality feel, it’s soft and cool on the skin with a lovely satin weave finish.

As a bonus, Simba have added their Stratos® finish to this bed linen set. This Stratos® technology is used on a lot of Simba products, and means that the fabric is designed to feel instantly cool to the touch, and helps to dissipate excess body heat. This luxurious cotton Simba bedding set really does feel light, breathable and cool to sleep in.

2. Summer Tog Duvet

I love my cosy 13.5 tog duvet in the winter months, but it’s far too heavy when the weather gets warmer. I have just switched to a lighter 4.5 tog Feels Like Down Duvet from Julian Charles, and it feels light but still warm, and I’ve slept perfectly since making this simple summer switch.

3. Cooling Body Pillow

I’ve been experiencing some back and hip pain lately and I wanted to invest in a good quality body pillow to align my spine while I sleep. My new Simba Body Pillow is designed for side sleepers to provide spinal alignment and reduce pressure on the hips and shoulders. As an additional benefit though, this innovative pillow is perfect for the summer months as the whole of the pillow cover has Simba’s cool-touch Stratos® technology added. It’s designed to make the fabric itself feel fresh to the touch, and to encourage heat dissipation for a more comfortable sleep. Plus the cover is removable and washable too!

The recommended usage is to hug the long curved pillow and position one leg on top, knee slightly bent, and one underneath. So far this has been an improvement for me, and I’m waking feeling fewer aches and pains and generally more rested. Plus it has kept me from overheating through the night too!

4. A Fan (For Those Very Hot Nights)

A bedroom fan is an absolutely essential bedroom item when a heatwave lands as a cooling breeze can make all the difference on a hot night. I have the oldest pedestal fan which still does a decent job for us when needed, but I’m certainly in need of an upgrade. So any suggestions for affordable fans or recommendations on great fan features to look out for are very welcome!

And one final tip for a cooler bedroom…

5. Keep The Curtains Closed During the Day

Closing the curtains or blinds during the day to block out the sun really does help to keep your room cooler ready for bedtime. If they’re blackout curtains or blinds, even better!

By incorporating these simple changes into my bedroom setup, I’m well on my way to enjoying cooler and more restful nights this summer!
