So this is the first of my Festive Friday series, which will be all about spreading those Christmas feelings. I hadn’t planned on starting quite so early, but when I heard that the Spinningfields ice rink was being launched this week, it definitely made me feel a little bit more festive!
The Manchester city centre outdoor ice rink had its grand opening in Spinningfields on Wednesday, with drinks and a jazz band in the neighbouring Long Bar and some warm-up skating from some talented youngsters. It looks lovely in the evening when the sun goes down thanks to all the lovely twinkling Christmas lights. And there’s nothing nicer after a shopping trip in Manchester than a romantic skate in an outdoor ice rink when the weather is cold and you’re wrapped up warm.
The skating is now open until 5th January and costs £8 off-peak, £9 peak for adults, and £7 off-peak and £8 peak for children (with family rates also available).
I mentioned the Long Bar, and we called in for a festive tipple after checking out the skating. This bar really fits in with the winter vibe with their wooden chalet feel, hot winter cocktails, a Bierhaus and hot fruit pies! It’s a nice place to warm up after the skating fun.
And if you do pop down to Spinningfields it’s worth exploring the rest of the festivities. It’s now all decked out and looking magical, and if you head over to The Oast House their Curious Teepee is now open! I had a quick look inside as their sign sounded very inviting – “please come inside and get cosy” – and I’ll certainly be popping back as it’s gorgeous and snug in there. It’s covered in fairy lights and Christmas trees, they’ve got cosy faux furs covering the wooden seating and there’s a fire pit in the centre to snuggle up around.
