This post is for chalkboard newbies like me, who have no idea that you have to “season” your brand new chalkboards before you use them. If you’re a “seasoned” chalkboard user already (see what I did there?) you’ll already know this of course, and will be like “uh of course you do, fool!” But sadly I did not know this and learned the hard way that if you do not prep your board before using it then not only will you struggle to write on it, but also the board will become permanently burned with whatever you try to write. This is true of boards you buy as well as DIY boards you make with chalkboard paint.
The reason for this is that the chalkboard surface is porous, and seasoning it is just a very quick and easy solution.
- Use the side of a chalk to cover the entire chalkboard in chalk. Rub both horizontally and vertically for complete coverage.
- Then use a paper towel to wipe the board clean of chalk.
That’s literally all there is to it. Prep your chalkboard like this and you’ll be ready for action! Now you can spend your time making pretty pictures and writing cute messages instead of wondering what on earth is wrong with your board and chalks!
